Tune-Ups

The old style tune-up, with points and carburetor adjustments, went away decades ago. On a modern engine, a tune-up means replacing the parts that wear out on a schedule and checking the systems that keep the engine running smoothly.

What that usually includes depends on your vehicle's mileage and maintenance schedule:

  • Spark plugs, on the interval your manufacturer calls for
  • Ignition coils or wires when they test weak
  • Engine air filter and cabin air filter
  • Fuel filter on vehicles that have a serviceable one
  • A check of belts, hoses, and the battery

Signs your engine is due

  • Rough or shaky idle
  • Hesitation or stumbling when you accelerate
  • Harder starts than usual
  • Fuel economy dropping for no clear reason
  • A check engine light, especially a flashing one

A flashing check engine light usually means an active misfire. Stop driving hard and get it checked soon, because a misfire can damage the catalytic converter. Our vehicle diagnostics service reads the codes and finds the cause before any parts get replaced.

Where to get a tune-up

Tune-ups are done at 12040 O'Connor Rd on the Northeast side. Pair it with an oil change and a battery test, especially before summer, when San Antonio heat is hardest on engines and batteries.

Questions we hear

How often do I need a tune-up?

Your owner's manual lists spark plug and filter intervals. Many modern plugs last a long time, but filters need changing more often, especially in dusty conditions.

Will a tune-up fix my check engine light?

Sometimes, if the cause is a worn plug or coil. The right first step is reading the code so we replace what is actually wrong.

Can a tune-up improve gas mileage?

If worn plugs, a clogged air filter, or a misfire were hurting efficiency, fixing them can help. It will not turn a truck into a hybrid, but it can bring mileage back to where it should be.
