A muffler rarely fails all at once. It rusts from the inside, a seam opens up, or a hanger breaks and the pipe starts to sag. You notice it as a louder rumble, a rattle underneath at idle, or an exhaust smell in the cabin.
That last one matters. An exhaust leak ahead of the cabin can let carbon monoxide inside. If you smell exhaust while driving, get it checked right away.

Questions we hear
Why is my car suddenly so loud?
Usually a hole in the muffler or a pipe, or a joint that has separated. It can also be a broken hanger letting the system hang and crack. We can put it on a lift and show you.
Is it safe to drive with an exhaust leak?
It is not a good idea. Depending on where the leak is, exhaust gases can reach the cabin. If you smell exhaust inside the car, have it checked as soon as you can.
Can you fix just the part that is broken?
Often, yes. We replace the section that failed when the rest of the system is in good shape, and we will tell you if it is not.
