Vehicle Diagnostics

Modern cars run on computers. When a sensor sees something out of range, the engine computer stores a trouble code and often turns on a warning light. That code is a starting point, not an answer. A code for a lean condition, for example, can come from a vacuum leak, a weak fuel pump, a dirty sensor, or a leaking intake gasket.

Good diagnostics goes past the code:

  • Scanning all the modules, not just the engine
  • Reading freeze frame data that shows conditions when the fault happened
  • Testing the sensor, wiring, or component the code points to
  • Checking for known issues on your make and model
  • Explaining what we found in plain language before any repair

Warning lights and symptoms

A steady check engine light means get it checked soon. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it looked at right away.

Diagnostics is also where we start for symptoms without a light: rough running, stalling, hard starts, electrical problems, batteries that keep dying, and noises that come and go. Some of those lead to a tune-up, some to battery and charging work, and some to transmission repair.

Questions we hear

Can I just get my codes read?

Reading codes is part of diagnostics, but a code alone rarely tells you what to replace. We test to confirm the cause.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If it is steady and the car drives normally, get it checked soon. If it is flashing, or the car runs badly, stop driving hard and get it in right away.

Will a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light?

It can, on many vehicles. Tighten it and see if the light clears after a few drives. If not, bring it in.
