Used Tires
A good used tire is the right call more often than people think. If you need to replace one damaged tire and the other three still have plenty of tread, a matching used tire keeps the set even for a fraction of what four new ones cost. It also makes sense on a work truck, a second car, or a vehicle you plan to sell soon.
What makes a used tire good is what happened to it before it reached the rack. That is why we look at every one before we sell it:
- Tread depth, measured, not eyeballed
- Sidewalls for cuts, bulges, cracking, and old plug patches that were done wrong
- The DOT date code, because rubber ages even when the tread looks fine
- The bead area, so the tire seals properly on your wheel
If a tire does not pass, it does not get sold. We would rather tell you we do not have your size today than put something on your car we would not drive on ourselves.
Which locations carry used tires
Used tires are stocked at 12040 O'Connor Rd on the Northeast side between Loop 410 and Loop 1604. Inventory changes every day, so the fastest way to find your size is to call us with the numbers off your sidewall. They look like 225/65R17.
Every used tire we sell gets the same tire installation and computer balancing as a new one. If you need a whole set or the size you want is not in stock, our new tires page covers what we can order.
When new is the better choice
We will tell you when used is not the right answer. If your other tires are worn down, if you drive long highway stretches on I-10 or I-35 every day, or if you need a specific all-terrain or load rating, a new tire usually costs less per mile. Ask us and we will give you a straight answer for your situation.
Questions we hear
Are used tires safe?
A used tire with good tread, no sidewall damage, and a reasonable age is safe for normal driving. The risk comes from tires nobody inspected. We check every tire before it goes on the rack.
How old is too old for a used tire?
Look at the four digit DOT date code on the sidewall. It shows the week and year the tire was made. Many carmakers recommend replacing tires around six to ten years from manufacture regardless of tread. We factor age into what we sell.
Can you match the tires I already have?
Often, yes. Bring the size from your sidewall and, if you can, the brand and model. We will look for the closest match in stock.
