Catalytic Converters

The catalytic converter sits in the exhaust and uses precious metals to turn harmful gases into less harmful ones. It usually lasts a long time. When it fails, something else is often to blame, like an engine misfire, burning oil, or coolant getting into the exhaust.

Signs of a failing converter:

  • A check engine light with a catalyst efficiency code, such as P0420 or P0430
  • A rattle underneath, from broken material inside the converter
  • A rotten egg or sulfur smell from the exhaust
  • Sluggish acceleration or poor fuel economy from a clogged converter
  • A very loud exhaust, which can mean the converter was cut out and stolen

Fix the cause first

Replacing a converter without fixing why it failed means the new one can fail too. If a misfire, oil burning, or a faulty oxygen sensor is involved, that has to be addressed. We check for those causes, often using vehicle diagnostics, before recommending a converter.

Converter theft is a real problem, especially on trucks and SUVs with higher ground clearance. If yours was cut out, we can replace it and repair the pipes that were damaged.

Questions we hear

What does code P0420 mean?

It means the engine computer thinks the converter on bank one is not working efficiently. The converter is a common cause, but a bad oxygen sensor or exhaust leak can trigger it too.

Can I drive with a bad catalytic converter?

A clogged converter can cause the engine to lose power and overheat the exhaust. Get it checked soon.

My converter was stolen. Can you replace it?

Yes. We replace the converter and repair the pipe where it was cut.
