Flat Tire Repair
Flat Repair
Flats happen. Construction on 1604 and 410 leaves screws and nails on the road, and a slow leak can go unnoticed until the tire pressure light comes on or the tire is sitting low in the morning. Walk into any of our locations and we will get you back on the road.
A repair done right follows a few rules:
- The tire comes off the wheel so we can inspect it from the inside
- The puncture has to be in the tread area, not the sidewall or shoulder
- The hole has to be within repairable size, generally a quarter inch or smaller
- The repair is a plug and patch combination that seals from inside and fills the hole
- The tire is remounted and balanced
When a flat cannot be fixed
Some damage is not safe to repair. Punctures in the sidewall, cuts, damage from driving on a flat for a long distance, and holes too close to a previous repair usually mean the tire needs to be replaced. Driving on a flat can shred the inside of the sidewall even if the outside looks fine, which is why we inspect from the inside.
If the tire cannot be saved, we will help you pick a new tire or, at O'Connor Rd, a matching used tire.
Any of our 3 locations
Flat repair is part of our tire shop at all 3 locations. If your spare is on, do not wait too long. Many spares are temporary and not built for highway speeds or long distances.
Questions we hear
Can a tire with a nail in it be repaired?
Usually, if the nail is in the tread area and the tire was not driven on while flat. Leave the nail in until you get to the shop. It helps slow the leak.
Can you fix a puncture in the sidewall?
No. Sidewall repairs are not considered safe because that part of the tire flexes constantly. The tire needs to be replaced.
Are plug-only repairs okay?
A plug from the outside is a temporary roadside fix. A proper repair uses a patch from the inside combined with a plug to fill the hole.
