Tires do not wear evenly on their own. Front tires handle steering and most of the braking, so on a front-wheel drive car they wear faster and differently than the rears. Trucks and rear-wheel drive vehicles have their own wear patterns. Rotating the tires spreads that wear across all four.
The pattern depends on your vehicle:
- Front-wheel drive usually moves the fronts straight back and crosses the rears to the front
- Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive usually do the reverse
- Directional tires only move front to back on the same side
- Some vehicles with different size tires front and rear cannot be rotated in the usual way
What we look at while the tires are off
A rotation is a good chance to catch problems early. While the wheels are off, we look at tread depth across each tire, uneven wear that points to alignment or suspension issues, and anything stuck in the tread. If we see a wear pattern that suggests the car needs a wheel alignment or a balance, we will tell you.
